The reason for this can be any such as the default value in the boot.ini file is missing or corrupted, windows is not at the location which is specified in boot.ini file, the path in file Boot.ini is not set correctly, the Ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or it could also be due to the general failure of the hardware.

Edit boot.ini file

In order to restore or correct the default entry you must edit the Boot.ini file. It should also be edited so that all the entries that are done to the operating system should point to the right direction.

Bootcfg utility

You can also use the bootcfg utility which is present in the recovery console in order to correct the boot.ini file. To do so you must start your computer with Windows XP CD Rom and press R when you receive the message to press this key from the recovery console. You must select the Windows installation and then write the administrator password. Type bootcfg / rebuild then press enter. Some instructions would be displayed once you have located the Windows installation. Type “Y” to add installation to boot list. For Loader identifier, you must type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition. The next step i.e. enter OS load options should be left blank. You must restart your computer after this.

In order to solve these problems you can also follow another method. Start your computer with the help of the recovery console then run the CHKDSK/ rcommand. There would be no need to include the /p switch as the /r switch in the CHKDSK command would be locating all of the bad sectors present and would also recover the readable information from your computer. In this manner, you would be able to get the solution to your problem and would be able to get back to your Windows in an easier way.
